The Cairo Lady Cats fell just short to the Chadwick Lady Cardinals 44-43 in the Class 1 State Championship Game Saturday night.
The Lady Cats grabbed the initial lead but fought from behind for most of the night. Cairo trailed for 21 minutes in total but never by more than six. A breakthrough came early in the fourth quarter.
That put Cairo ahead 35-33 but Chadwick instantly took the lead back with a triple by Macy Landry, which was the only three-point make of the night for the Lady Cardinals.
Cairo tied things again late.
Chadwick took the definitive lead by scoring four straight points at the free throw line. The last chance for the Lady Cats came when Olivia Cross made a three with six seconds left to put them within one. Chadwick missed both of its ensuing foul shots, but Cairo couldn’t get a game-winner to fall at the buzzer.
Avery Brumley scored a game-high 17 points and was the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Fellow senior Macie Harman added 13. The Lady Cats close the season 25-7.
Ray Little and Millie Burkhart had 11 and 10 respectively for the Lady Cardinals. The victory completed a Class 1 sweep for Chadwick with the boys winning it all as well.
