A go-ahead two-run single by Zander Holman in the top of the sixth was enough for the Cairo Bearcats to pull off a 5-4 win over the Westran Hornets Monday.
Both teams scored three runs in their halves of the first inning. DC Dale put the host Hornets ahead in the second.
Westran starter Cooper Harvey got out of a huge jam in the fifth. After Cairo loaded the bases with nobody out, Harvey got a strikeout then forced an inning-ending double play.
Harvey reached his pitch count after recording the second out of the sixth inning. With Gage Adler on in relief, Clayton Messer singled and Carson Hilke reached on an error. That’s when Holman made the costly error hurt.
Holman, Messer and Paten Ratliff had two hits. Holman was the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Conner Wright and Kaden Winkler each drove in a run. Winkler was Cairo’s starting pitcher and surrendered four unearned runs over two innings. Messer got the win after tossing five scoreless innings.
For Westran, Hampton Summers and Kayle Courtney drove in a run along with Dale. Gage Boeger had two hits.
The result snapped a pair of streaks. Cairo breaks a three-game skid to move to 10-7 while Westran sees a five-game win streak end to fall to 14-6.
