Cairo softball attained its second straight shutout victory to start the season with a 4-0 win over Westran Tuesday. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Melia Gittemeier reached on a two-out error then Chloe Brumley and Kylee Dodge singled. Gittemeier scored on a wild pitch and Olivia Cross added on.
In the circle, Cross struck out 10 in a complete game effort and was named the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Norah Harvey tossed all six innings for Westran. The Lady Hornets got out of a couple bases loaded jams early in the game.
Westran’s biggest offensive threat came in the sixth when Jaelyn Miller and Lanie Kertz reached base, but Cross shut down the next two batters to end the frame. Cairo’s next game comes at Paris Thursday, where its season ended last year. Westran hosts Madison Thursday.
