The Harrisburg Bulldogs swept the Hallsville Indians in a varsity doubleheader at Battle High School Saturday.
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the second inning to set the tone for a 10-0, six-inning win in Game 1. Keagan Morris, Hunter Caldwell and Thomas Harrison all drove in runs in that frame that saw 11 batters come to the plate.
Caldwell drove in two more in a four-run fourth.
Morris led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and scored the game-winning run when Rylee Robinson bunted a ball down the first base line and the throw to first was wild.
Caldwell also started and gave up three hits and struck out five over four scoreless innings. He earned Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Landon Atkins followed by giving up two hits over two scoreless.
Hallsville came back with a competitive Game 2 but ultimately fell 6-5.
Kaden Thompson led off the game with a single for the Indians and later scored on an error. Harrisburg responded with two runs in the bottom half and added a single run in the third and fourth.
Hallsville got back in it with a three-run fifth. After the first run scored on an error, Tracy Melloway had a sac fly. Landon Cunningham doubled and scored the tying run on a Jackson Sides single.
A costly infield error by Hallsville with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth allowed Harrisburg to score the go-ahead run. Ike DeMuth added a sac fly to put the Bulldogs up 6-4.
Defense again played a role in the seventh. Harrisburg made an error on what would’ve been the final out to set up Jackson Sides to come through again.
DeMuth, who threw a complete game, then got a strikeout to close out the sweep. Only one of the five runs he allowed was earned and he was named Player of the Game. Landon Atkins had two hits and drove in two runs. Harrisburg batters did not have a strike out in either game.
Hallsville’s Landon Cunningham went a combined 4-for-6 with two doubles and a walk over the two games.
Harrisburg moves to 8-9 overall while Hallsville drops its 16th straight game to fall to 3-17.
