Monroe City Tops Palmyra in Tony Lenzini Tournament Finals

Monroe City won the boys championship game of the Tony Lenzini Tournament over host Palmyra 62-50 Saturday.

Monroe City started the game on an 8-2 run and led 11-7 after one quarter. Quincy Mayfield had eight points in that opening frame and continued building on it.

Mayfield finished with a game-high 20 points in three quarters and was the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Palmyra pulled within three before Monroe extended the lead back to seven by half. That carried over into a third quarter that saw Monroe lead by as much as 15. Palmyra’s best run followed.

The closest 14-3 Palmyra got was five points early in the fourth. Mason Smith had a team-high 15 points and Pierce White closed with 10. For 12-2 Monroe City, Brent Holland and Cole Hays joined Mayfield in double figures with 13 and 11 respectively.

It’s the second tournament championship game the Monroe City boys have defeated Palmyra in this season. The two teams meet up for their conference game February 11th in Monroe City.
