The North Shelby boys maintained a late lead while the South Shelby girls dominated the second half in a Battle of Shelby County split Friday.
After both teams held an advantage at some point in each of the first three quarters, the North Shelby Raiders never trailed in the final frame of a 61-55 win. Gannon Bowen put in nine of his 23 points that quarter. It helped the Raiders build their largest lead.
South Shelby went on a quick 10-0 run, though, behind the hot hand of Colt Schmitz.
The Raiders got off to a 12-3 start and led for the majority of the game outside of a few possessions. They move to 5-6. South Shelby falls to 3-7.
South’s girls used a 19-3 third quarter to pull away with a 58-33 win.
Ainsleigh Truitt hit four total threes for 12 points. Ellie Kuntz, playing increased minutes because of foul trouble, also had 12 along with a block to end the first quarter. Hannah Gaines added 11. North Shelby was led by Harper Copenhaver with 10 points.
South Shelby improves to 7-2 with its fifth straight win. North Shelby is now 5-6.
