Late game heroics from Olivia Dunwoody and Jay Lindsay helped Moberly pull off a sweep of Marshall in an NCMC doubleheader Friday.
Dunwoody dropped a career-high 35 points to lead the Moberly girls to a 61-59 win. Marshall jumped out to an 11-2 lead before Moberly closed the gap to five after the first quarter.
The Lady Spartans used a 15-0 run through the end of the second and start of the third quarter to go up 39-33, but Marshall closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to tie it going to the fourth. That’s when Dunwoody, who already had 18 points, added on to her big night.
Moberly extended its lead to six but Marshall didn’t go down quietly, briefly grabbing a lead at 54-53. Dunwoody provided an answer.
Marshall quickly regained the lead with a three of its own. Dunwoody then put the icing on the cake.
The Lady Spartans move to 2-4 and 1-1 in conference play.
The Moberly boys won a back-and-forth battle 62-59. The Spartans led 33-29 at half after a second quarter that featured eight lead changes. Marshall used a 15-2 run to go up 45-40 early in the fourth quarter. Moberly’s response was powered by Jay Lindsay.
Lindsay had made just two threes all season coming into the game. Leading by a single point in the final minute, the Spartans maintained possession and got the free throws they needed to ice the game. Freshman Amare Hawkins again broke his career-high with 16 points. Mason Bivins scored 15 and Collin Knox provided 13.
Marshall got 20, 19 and 14 from Chase Thompson, Deacon Arends and Brody Kueker.
Moberly moves to 6-2, 2-0 in the NCMC.
