Putnam County Breaks Away in Second Half, Advances to State Semis

The Putnam County Midgets are moving on to the state semifinals after an 18-0 win over the Salisbury Panthers in a battle of unbeatens.

The defensive slugfest remained scoreless at halftime. Putnam had a touchdown wiped off because of a holding penalty.

Putnam’s Treven Riediger had a 50+ yard kick return to start the second half and he found the endzone four plays later.

Riediger ran for an unofficial 100 yards on 11 carries. Angstrom Watt found paydirt later in the quarter.

He added another in the closing minutes.

Watt ran 25 times for 150 yards and was named Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. He also surpassed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season, joining both Riediger and Corbin Campbell-Johnson in eclipsing that mark this year.

Putnam’s stifling defense limited Salisbury to 120 yards of total offense and it’s the team’s sixth shutout of the season.

The Midgets will play either Van-Far or Hayti in the semifinals.
