The Putnam County Midgets were shut out in the second half of the Class 1 Show Me Bowl and fell to the Tipton Cardinals 39-14.
Putnam overcame an early fumble by turning Tipton over on downs on the Cardinals’ first two drives. Tipton still struck first, though, on a seven-yard touchdown run by Will Cashman with 2:49 left in the first. The Midgets responded on the ensuing drive.
Tyler Rivera ran in two touchdowns in the second quarter for Tipton. Putnam’s Angstrom Watt punched one in from two yards out with 1:50 left in the first half. Matthew Blanchard’s extra point made it a five point deficit at 19-14. That score held to the break after Putnam forced its third TOD of the half.
The Midgets got the ball to start the second half and took over seven minutes off the clock before being turned over on downs themselves. Tipton took firm momentum late in the quarter when they got a big play on 4th and 3.
The dagger came midway through the fourth.
Will Cashman, Tipton’s leading receiver who had just 26 rush attempts all season, ran seven times for 88 yards and three touchdowns. He was named the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Quarterback Dane Schlotzhauer completed 9-of-15 passes for 173 yards.
Putnam’s Treven Riediger had 11 carries for 101 yards. Watt and Corbin Campbell-Johnson ran for 44 and 35 yards respectively. Riediger also led the defense with eight tackles, two of them for a loss.
The Midgets close their historic season at 13-1.
