South Shelby Girls Hand Harrisburg First Loss, Boys Defeat La Plata

The South Shelby Ladybirds ended Day 1 of the MACC Holiday Shootout with a 54-46 win over Harrisburg, handing the Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the season.

South Shelby benefited from a hot start in leading the entire way.

The Ladybirds built their lead as high as 18 with the first bucket of the second half. Harrisburg slowly started to claw back.

That was one of three times Harrisburg got within six in the fourth quarter. As part of a 17 point night, South’s Gracynn Lanpher hit three-of-four free throws down the stretch to help close it out. Hannah Gaines had 11. The Ladybirds have won four in-a-row and are 6-2. Harrisburg falls to 7-1 and got 13 and 12 respectively from Brette Ackman and Lorelai Hunziker.

The South Shelby boys also shot it well in a 75-57 victory over the La Plata Bulldogs.

That sequence was part of a 20-3 South Shelby run to give the Cardinals a 36-27 halftime lead. La Plata had gone up by eight with a 13-0 run immediately prior. South built its lead up to 16 in the third and it got cut to six early in the fourth, but the Cardinals iced it with a 14-0 run.

Colt Schmitz knocked down five threes and finished with 23 points. Waylen Owens added 14. Jace McWilliams and Peyson Larrick each had 13. South Shelby improves to 3-6. La Plata drops to 4-6. Kendrick Hulett led all scorers with 25.
