South Shelby Slays The Dragons

The South Shelby Cardinals advanced to the Class 2 semifinals with a 28-26 win at 6th-ranked Mid-Buchanan Saturday afternoon. Thanks to an eight-yard touchdown run by Pryce Eagan, a one-yard rushing touchdown by Chase Moellering, and a 64-yard touchdown pass from Moellering to Eagan, South Shelby jumped out to a 20-0 lead by halftime. However, three Cardinals’ turnovers in the third quarter cut the lead to six going into the fourth. Moellering, the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game, led the Cardinals nearly the length of the field early in the fourth, setting up fourth and goal at the 3.

J.B. Connoley with the call on NEMO Pressbox. The Dragons answered with a touchdown with 2:25 left to pull within 8, and recovered an onside kick.

Raife Smith was out of the game for the two-point try.

South Shelby’s final drive went three-and-out, but even with Smith able to re-enter the game, the Dragons could not score in the final half minute. South Shelby is now 11-1, and will host top-ranked and 13-0 Fair Grove next Saturday at 2. Fair Grove beat Lafayette County 14-13. Mid-Buchanan’s season ends at 12-1.
