Stout Defense Leads Fayette to Win at Westran

Fayette gutted out a 7-6 win in a defensive battle at Westran Friday night.

The Falcons did not allow a first down until Westran’s third offensive drive. Their score came late in the first quarter.

Carter Vroman made the extra point, which proved to be pivotal. That 7-0 score held until the closing minute of the third quarter.

Fayette made the stop on Westran’s two-point attempt. Midway through the final quarter, the Hornets got a fourth down stop after Fayette reached their 28. On the ensuing drive, they converted on a crucial fourth down.

Fayette’s defense, though, ultimately provided the dagger.

Westran used all its timeouts and forced a 4th and 4, but Fayette put the game away by getting the Hornets to bite on a hard count.

Both teams had numerous advantageous opportunities throughout the game. Late in the first half, Fayette drove to Westran’s 34, but the drive stalled after back-to-back penalties. The Falcons stopped Westran at the end of the first half on a drive that reached their 26.

Both teams fumbled away their first drive of the second half.

When it was a one-point game, Westran forced a fumble and recovered the ball on Fayette’s 13, but the Falcons stunted that scoring chance with an interception.

Vroman unofficially had 23 carries for 178 yards and was named the Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game.

Westran’s Adler had 67 passing yards and 69 rushing yards. Tiernan Mooneyham had four receptions for 20 yards, Jordan Black three for 32 and Brody Kallmeyer three for 10.
