Just like Friday’s comeback win, the Moberly Spartans found themselves down 3-1 in the 7th inning with two outs and the bases loaded, but this time Tolton Catholic reliever Lucas Wietholder struck out Nolan Samuel and the Trailblazers stopped the team that knocked them out of the state playoffs last year.
Moberly lost the coin flip and batted first. Ashton Hunt was hit by a pitch and with two outs scored on this single by Kyler Fanning….
Brad Boyer with the call on nemopressbox.com. Tolton came right back and scored in the bottom half on a walk and a double by Matthew States. Later in the frame, States was thrown out at the plate on a throw by right fielder Mitchell Bruce, to catcher Drew Smothers.
It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 5th. Wietholder led off with a single and Karter Ball walked. States hit a ball off the fence and with Wietholder waiting to make sure the ball wasn’t caught it gave the Spartans a chance to throw him out at the plate….
Moberly starter Jackson Engel was lifted for Max Richardson, who got three straight outs, but back-to-back sacrifices allowed Ball to score to make it 3-1. Engel took his only loss of the season to drop to 7-1. Sam Ryan pitched 6-and-two-thirds of four-hit ball and got the win to improve to 5-1. The Blazers improve to 21-6-1 and will host MICDS in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday.
Moberly centerfielder Kyler Fanning was our Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Along with a number of good catches, he went 2-3 at the plate and drove in the only run. The Spartans set a season-record for victories by finishing 28-7. They won the program’s first outright NCMC championship and made it back-to-back district titles. Moberly seniors graduating are Engel, Bruce, Cade Bohm, Carson Fletcher and Jay Lindsay.
