Topel’s Walk-Off Homer Completes Comeback, Sends Montgomery County Softball to First Final Four

Montgomery County softball is going to the Final Four for the first time in program history.

The Lady Wildcats entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-4. Reese Hill walked and Gracie Cobb reached on a bunt single to bring up Sam Turner.

It was the second time in the game Montgomery erased a deficit. Chaffee scored three runs on six hits over the first two innings. Hailey Myer drove in a run on a groundout in the bottom of the second and that 3-1 score held until the bottom of the fifth.

Kenley Wessel and Trinity Brown got on with one-out walks. Hill hit next.

Hill scored on a hard ground ball from Cobb to give Montgomery a 4-3 lead, but Chaffee responded with two runs in the sixth to take the lead right back.

Right before Topel’s walk-off homer, Chaffee’s defense turned a huge double play on a bunt attempt. The Lady Devils end their season at 25-4.

Topel was named Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game. Hill pitched a complete game and struck out four. Montgomery County moves to 28-5 and will play South Harrison in the semifinals Friday morning at 11.
