A game-winning shot attempt by the South Shelby Cardinals fell short and the Westran Hornets completed a comeback victory 46-44 Tuesday.
South Shelby got out to an 18-9 start. Westran made it a one-point game in the second quarter, but the Cardinals built their lead back up to nine points with two minutes left in the third. That’s when Cruze Haynes started powering Westran’s comeback effort.
Westran broke through just past the midway point of the fourth quarter.
The Hornets proceeded to go up five points, but South Shelby didn’t go down quietly.
Haynes got fouled with seven seconds left and nailed two free throws to seal it. He finished with his second straight 21 point game to start the season. Hayden Chapman had 13. Colt Schmits paced the Cardinals with 12.
The South Shelby girls nearly led wire-to-wire in a 53-40 victory. The Ladybirds held a 14-7 advantage after one, 24-18 at half and 33-22 after three. They started to distance themselves early in the fourth.
Hannah Gaines and Ainslee Truitt ended with 22 and 11 points respectively.
Westran kept it competitive by going on a 10-0 run before South Shelby closed it out. The Lady Hornets were held without a field goal in the first quarter and made just one in the third. Jaelyn Miller concluded with 14 points.
