Westran Scores Two Late For Win at Salisbury

The Westran Lady Hornets did not grab their first lead until the top of the seventh but it was enough to take home a 3-2 win over the Salisbury Lady Panthers Tuesday.

Westran had been trailing 2-1 since the bottom of the third when Kate Hollman came through with a big swing in the sixth.

The Lady Hornets went ahead in the seventh after Jaelyn Miller led off with a single, used good baserunning to advance from first to third on a groundout, then scored on a Kiyah Massey groundout. Miller’s go-ahead run and two-hit night earned her Freeman Financial and Insurance Outstanding Player of the Game.

Ayla King put Salisbury on the board first.

Westran’s Lanie Kertz hit an RBI single in the second to tie. Salisbury regained the advantage on another solo home run in the third.

Westran’s defense helped eliminate multiple threats. Salisbury had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth when shortstop Kharigan Fuemmeler saved a near error by throwing out the lead runner at home. For the first out in the sixth, catcher Kalynn Carroll threw out Salisbury’s leadoff batter trying to steal third.

Starter Norah Harvey surrendered just two runs, four hits and one walk while striking out five in the win. Salisbury’s Quynn Fischer put up a similar line, giving up three runs, five hits, two walks and struck out six.
