Westran swept the championship games at the Sturgeon Tournament Saturday night.
The boys championship was a nail-biter with Westran topping New Franklin 48-45, avenging a loss from the New Franklin Tournament finals. The decisive shot came off the hands of Brody Kallmeyer.
The back-and-forth affair saw 12 ties and 14 lead changes. New Franklin’s final possession came while down two with eight seconds left and ended with a turnover. Outside of a very brief sequence early in the third quarter, the entire contest was a one-possession game.
Cruze Haynes and Jordan Black put in 13 and 10 points respectively for Westran while Kallmeyer chipped in nine. New Franklin’s Caden Schlotzhauer led all scorers with 18.
The Westran girls defeated Salisbury 53-46 for their second win over the Lady Panthers in as many weeks. Like last week, Westran benefited from a good start and got out to a 10-2 lead. Salisbury fought back to tie it in the second quarter and stayed within striking distance when the Lady Hornets regained the advantage.
Tied at 28 at halftime, Salisbury grabbed its first lead of the game with the opening bucket of the second half. The Lady Panthers maintained control for much of the quarter until Westran took the lead for good late in the frame.
Wortmann ended with 18 points. Jaelyn Miller scored a team-high 19. Salisbury’s Tori Ricketts put in a game-high 23 while Julia Sloan added 18.
In the boys 3rd Place game, South Callaway pulled ahead in the second half to beat Salisbury 52-44. South Callaway started the game on an 11-4 run but then Salisbury matched that run to tie the game at 15. Colten Crocker had the final shot of the first quarter.
South led 25-24 at half and won the third quarter 18-13. With Salisbury trying to close in, Crocker delivered another big shot in the fourth.
Crocker finished with 10 points. Tucker Jones led the team with 14 and Graden Pontius had 13. Salisbury’s Austin Cravens had a game-high 16.
To open the day, the Paris girls and New Bloomfield boys won consolation championships while the New Franklin girls took 3rd Place.
